BMW R1100RS side stand problem?

"...the bike won't start with the side stand down which it should..."

No, it shouldn't.

There is a safety switch, that stops the bike from starting, when the side stand is down. That is what it is designed to do.

"...as soon as I pull up the stand the bike will start"

That is correct.

"could it be the starter relay ?"

Well, since your bike is functioning as it is designed to, no.

Safety features,

Try pulling in the clutch then starting it.

And as others have stated it's for your own good!

I made myself look a right dick once,

new bike, filled it up and tried to start it,nada, nothing,

though the battery had gone.

On this bike it would start but as soon as it went into 1st it stalled,

or so I thought,

took a while to sink in that the side stand was down and the interlock switches were killing it!

knob!

And speaking as one who has banked a few bikes down to hit the side stand it ain't fun!!

Pull the clutch.

Nightworks is correct. If you don't have an owners manual I would get one and spend an hour or so reading it. The side stand switch is there to prevent the bike from being ridden with the stand down. If you start the bike (stand up) and put the stand down you will find the engine kills.

If you want to run the engine with the bike stationary, use the center stand.

Nightworks is correct.

A safety feature to prevent you riding off with the sidestand down and looking foolish on the next left bend.

It also conforms to the law - The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/...

"Motor cycle sidestands

38. (1) No motor cycle first used on or after 1st April 1986 shall be fitted with any sidestand which is capable of―

(a)disturbing the stability or direction of the motor cycle when it is in motion under its own power; or

(b)closing automatically if the angle of the inclination of the motor cycle is inadvertently altered when it is stationary.

(2) In this regulation “sidestand” means a device fitted to a motor cycle which, when fully extended or pivoted to its open position, supports the vehicle from one side only and so that both the wheels of the motor cycle are on the ground."

As (b) above is no longer allowed (a) cannot happen if the engine cuts out when in gear with the sidestand down.

To all who have answered my question, thank you but my old Honda would start with the stand down in neutral but would cut off as soon as you touched the gear lever even if the clutch was pulled in. I assumed this was the same for all bikes

That's how it should be.

Hi as I said on another question I have bought a BMW R1100RS 1994 model and the bike won't start with the side stand down which it should the switch seems to be working OK because as soon as I pull up the stand the bike will start, the clutch switch and neutral switches are working OK as well, could it be the starter relay ? has any one experienced this before or can any one help.
