Changing it will be a complete waste of cash and will not alter the change feel. Manual gearbox oil unlike engine oil is not subject to anything like the same stresses and does not degrade with use.
shifting problems could be caused by clutch wear or the clutch hydraulic system or worse case internal. if the fluid had been changed and wrong fluid used that could give you shifting problems but that doesn't sound like that happened
you should worry about your transmission when its slipping to be honest. most likly the motor will go out before the transmission and if the motor goes out most likly u have to change the transmission. just my thought process of thinking sir
THE FLUID IS NOT THE PROBLEM AS LONG AS IT IS FULL. THE LINKAGE, WITH HYDRAULIC OR CABLE TYPE, NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT.
I have a 2002 BMW 540i with a 6speed manual gearbox and with over 100,000 miles now, I want to change the fluid to help smooth out the shifting. I asked my local dealer, but they said it's "not a recommended procedure" because of the whole BMW "lifetime" fluid used in it. If they did, it would be about $700...uhh...f**k you!! So I'm going to do it myself. The only problem is what the hell fluid do I use? I've done some research and I've come up with 2 brands to use. First one is Redlines MT-90 fluid. But on their website it says the viscosity is 75w-90...wouldn't that be for the rear diff? And what about Mobil 1 Automatic Transmission fluid? I know that my car basically just has BMW's ATF in it. Would it Mobil 1 ATF damage my manual gearbox? I know how to do the whole procedure and all but when it comes to fluids and what not, I'm completely lost. So what would you guys recommend?
