Axle tower is rotted out?

Yes, prime disadvantage of unit bodies compared to body-on-frame: when the body rusts, you lose all body strength in that area. Been a big problem since Nash went to unibody in the 1940s: use to see old ones going around with the hood popping up by the windshield - or even the entire spring fly through the hood. They make those areas out of heavier sheet metal and try to retard rust . . . but steel will eventually rust and it isn't cheap - or sometimes not possible - to repair. Don't feel bad: Rolls-Royce went to unibody with the '67 Silver Shadow - they would rust around the rear axle mounts and the entire thing go to pieces.

Strut tower. Common for the vehicle. http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2000/dodg...

It's not just the strut pieces, it's the vehicle structure it's bolted to. If your POS is rusted like these examples, it will cost you an arm and a leg to repair. Open the hood and take a look where the struts attach.

This is a HUGE problem on Chrysler minivans. If the rust isn't too bad, you can have it repair with new strut caps (see post below). But if the rust has migrated down the strut tower, the entire vehicle is toast.

what is the car doing? I have never heard of an "axle tower".

While I was getting my oil changed the other day the mechanic told me that my axle tower was rotted out on my car and that I should consider buying a new car, as the repair is very expensive.

I attempted to do some research today, yet I am unable to find anything that is an "expensive repair".

He also mentioned that the axle tower is tilting and when it breaks hopefully I'm driving fast.

I am wondering if anybody better understands what is wrong with my car and could point me in a better direction.

I drive a 2000 Dodge Caravan.
