Alternator voltage stays the same even with a load on?

Alternator should always show about 14.5 volts, when read across the battery posts with the engine running.

if it goes above 14.6 volts then you could have a bad voltage regulator. 13.5 at idle increasing to 14.4 with rpm is normal.

That's what it's supposed to do.

What if it goes up?
