to explain what you need you need to understand what that rating and number system means.
15W40 for example
15 is the viscosity (how thick it is and how much it can lubricate)
40 is the viscosity when it is hot.
obviously youll want a motor oil that can stay thin and lubricate well, SAE is just a grading system for oil. so you don't actually have to say SAE every time, since if its classified as a 10weight or 15wieght etc, then that SAE part is self evident.
I suppose if your really geared towards trying a new oil for your AT, you could try NAPA and order a case of something and have it delivered to your nearest store, or mailbox. although I don't know why you want to switch, unless you want to try running it in the snow or something.
Call the dealer of the ATV. They will explain which motor oil is safe to use as recommended by the manufacturer. Wish you had told us the brand of the ATV so we could find out the correct answer to your question. We would think that Motorcycle Oil which is high with zinc and phosphorus (anti wear additives) for non-catalytic converter vehicles should be OK.
Since your ATV probably doesn't have a catalytic converter, high additive 15W-40 would be fine, as would 10W-40. Where the hell do you live, anyway? The Moon?
Like the title says, is there an alternate to "SAE 15W-40" ? This is for an ATV, and the manual says it needs "SAE 15W-40". The class can be "SC/SE/SF". I've not been able to find these anywhere that aren't for diesel. I did find that Amtecol sells all of those, the problem with that is no one sells that anywhere near me, nor could I find a place to order it. So, any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
