AC only cold with compressor on?

IT is normal for this phenomenon! You have a BAD pressure switch or a bad RECHARGE here! GO BACK to where they did the work and get it done OVER AGAIN! Your system has a blend of GAS and FLUID as well as PAG oil inside it! THey use a MACHINE NOW to recharge things up! IT CANNOT really be done any more with simple PRESSURE GAGES and get the job done RIGHT! Try a RADIATOR repair place! They USUALLY carry the proper equipment for a GOOD recharge and cleaning up of the OLD LIQUID and GAS inside system! They FILTER IT and add MORE as needed! This is NOT a DIY thing! GOODLUCK!!

If you have cold air only when your moving or driving you might have a bad condenser fan motor. In the front of your car you should have 2 fans and one should always turn on when you turn on the account the other is for cooling you engine it should turn on when the car began to get hot. If it's cold air you don't need to recharge and I wouldn't recommend it as you might over fill and it'll cause more problems and need to be vacuumed later. But try checking condenser fan it is supposed to stay on 99% of the time your account runs

could be air in the system , or low charge , have system vacuumed down and recharged

When the clutch engages the compressor is running. When the clutch disengages the compressor is not on.

go have your system checked

2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XLS. I noticed that the air is only "cold" when the clutch engages. When it's off, it's just "cool".

That's not enough for a hot summer day, as I'm just waiting for the next clutch engagement.

What could be the problem? Is that normal to only be cold only when the compressor is on?
