solenoid is bad...
sometimes the drive sticks when not used regularly and it just sticks in engagement with flywheel. Pull the starter ,apply a little moly lube on shaft activate the starter a few times with jumper cables to check. Then make sure the drive freewheels one and locks the other ...some auto parts stores can benchtest them...good luck. Do a dry run the little wire should be a push-on pull off and have a plastic or rubber hammer ready.
PS these systems will crank down to 9 volts but the amperage draw at the lower voltage would "weld" the contacts together in the solenoid and/or the starter shunt contacts.Check your battery...This problem was common on Fords if you need a solenoid find a Marine solenoid , and if you need a starter convert it to the 92-97 solenoid on top style fed by the Ford solenoid... Ford supplied us with a kit to convert our vehicles as needed... maybe someone at Ford specialty /racing parts can assist you....
yeah, my first guess would be a bad solenoid because it wont shut off after you turn the key off.
next time it does that , instead of slaming the hood.
Get a wrench and hit the solenoid directly and see if it stops.
A bad sol could also make it not start and just click..
You can take your starter out and test it by applying 12 v from your batt to the sol and see if it working.
I just replaces the starter when I got the truck so... I'm going to test the solenoid
Could be the solenoid, or the battery is getting worn out! They can check what the prob is at an auto parts store. Oh, before you do that, make sure that the electrical connections are tight. Be careful to NOT short the positive side to any ground!
your friends dad is right there is a solenoid on the fender well and one on the starter
Your friend's dad could be right BUT the starter drive (Bendix) could be bad also.
Listen to your friend's dad.
Whenever I go to start my 87 f-250 460, it clicks and clicks and then it will start but then sometimes it sticks, and even though I take the key out I have to pop the hood and slam it shut to disengage and shut back off. My friends dad told me it was the starter solenoid but I'm not shut has anyone had this problem before?
