1972 Chevrolet Chevelle carburetor problems?

Choke setting....idle mixture.....vacuum leaks......ignition timing

choke....should be set to not only choke when cold but to stay set until engine is nearly warm. When choked there is a fast idle setting this is two or three steps.

you need to find either a book on your car or a book on Rochester carburetors or both. the choke has a "stove" a bimetallic spring which controls it. these wear out.

you say once it's warmed the problem goes away so carb and adjustments should do the trick. it takes quite a while for the carb to fully warm and todays fuel is very different from the stuff used when your car was designed. so the factory settings may need a little fudging. this will be trial and error.

your other alternative is to find an old duffer like me who worked on that stuff and knows what to do.

FORGOT TO SAY THIS SO I ADD IT NOW!!!

those old Rochester carbs can crack in the float bowl between the metering rods.

see the picture of the Holley below???

summitracing.com

Right now there is a summit brand carb on sale......an edelbrock carb would also work well.

If you aren't sure what carb to get then call summit tech line and tell them what you have....engine and modification....trans type...gear ratio.....they can recommend a few carbs perfect for your car!!!

jegs.com will do the same!!!

chevelle parts / classic car parts

Also check and adjust choke

float or choke if you dont smell gas its your choke your tailpipe will have black soot clean the mechanism carb and choke cleaner

Sounds like you need to (adjust) raise the low idle setting ............

So when my chevelle is cold and i start the car it fires up with no problem. but when i put it in gear the engine will bog down and die. i can keep it running when i step on the gas. the problem is when i reach a stop light it will die unless i keep on the gas and brake. also when the car is hot after driving for like 30 minute on the free way the car will not die at a stop light. so what would make the car die when the engine is cold and in gear?
