02 petrol focus ran dry, fuel added but now failing to start, any ideas? Getting spark etc.?

If you hear the fuel pump powering up when you turn the key to 'on' (you'll hear it hum at the back of the car upon turning the key) but the engine is getting no fuel, then my guess is that you clogged the sock filter on the fuel pump with junk that was happily minding its own business at the bottom of your fuel tank until you ran the tank dry and dredged 12 years of sediment up and into the sock filter.

If you don't hear a humming when you turn the key to 'on', then I'll guess you either have a ruined fuel pump or a bad fuel pump relay.

You could try changing the in-line fuel filter under the car since they are cheap and relatively easy to replace, but my guess is that's not the problem and you'll end up having to take the fuel pump out of the tank to replace the sock filter on the pump itself.

Well its dangerous territory when you let it run low to the point where its empty is terrible. Especially for a car that old imagine all the rust and gunk at the bottom of your engine being pumped into your pistons?

If you kept trying to turn the key and start her back up when she ran out it could have just been something like the ignition barrel worn out? Apart from that bud i don't know, smart idea would be get a garage or a friend with good mechanical knowledge to give it a look over.

The fuel pump is in the tank. Access is strictly limited. Under the back seat carpet is a bung in the floor. You can get access to the wiring plug to see if you get a live feed and an earth at the fuel pump connector. If it's all there, it may be the in-tank pump failed. This does happen sometimes if run dry. It's rare, but it happens. Can you hear the fuel pump "buzz" as the ignition key is turned to get the dash lights on? If it does, there is power there, and it might be working. If no "buzz", then do the checks above.

remove the metal cover from the schrader valve on the fuel rail (looks like a tire valve with screw on metal cap) and while holding a rag in front and beneath, open the valve with a small tool, to let air out. When you get fuel coming out of the valve, you're ready to start it. Remember to replace cap on schrader. If you don't get fuel from valve, you may have ruptured the fuel pump diaphragm by running it dry. Before replacing pump, though, ensure it isn't a fuse or relay. Good idea to replace duel filter, too.

Prime the fuel system by doing the following: Switch the key one click before the start position *for 10 seconds. Repeat at least ten times turning the key off then back to one click before start.

if you are lucky fuel may not be in the lines yet so keep cranking.. Worst case here you blew the fuel pump. Fuel pumps need fuel to lubricate the internal parts so with no fuel means no lubrication, no lubrication means damaged fuel pump.. a car than old wont take much to burn out that pump. especially if you always drive around on less than a 1/4 tank..

You may have blown the fuel pump, or you may just have clogged the fuel lines with gunk. In either case, unless you know what you are doing you will have to call out a mechanic.

While attempting to start it; Try removing the air-box and covering the end of the air-intake hose, to allow less air, so you're choking it. Failing that, try easy start / WD40 (Just a little) etc into air intake hose.
