Which provides better protection against corrosion:

painting a metal or galvanizing a metal? Why

Galvanizing involves plating with zinc, which is regarded as a sacrificial metal . Zinc offer itself for corrosion before the host metal.

Hot dipped galvanizing is better than general painting. Coatings like powder coating can equal hot dip galvanizing in many environments.

Hot dip galvanizing is good because it provides a much thicker coating than other galvanizing. Powder coatings also provide a thicker coating that is baked on which provides a very good bond.

Depending on situation. Galvanizing is a better option. Epoxy based paint would cost more.

Usually galvanizing is better. With that said, once the galvanizing is depleted there is no protection.
