Wow... interesting question. Driving stick is like getting excited about driving again. Like anything else, it does take time. The hardest part about stick is getting out of first gear. After that, just listen to the engine. It will tell you when to change gears. I would try to avoid hills...especially stopping on an uphill. That's very scary.
Ha, the memories...I learned in my boyfriends car while he was at work. Of course that was in california so i hailed mary'd the freeway in 3rd and made it out alive and the car survived to. Honestly, i love a stick. it gives you a feeling of control and awareness that drivers often lack in an automatic which does all the work for you and leaves you easily distracted. Go for it and have fun.
I have driven manual & auto. I used to love manual but don't care much now, guess I am getting old. One major pro of manual is that you can't fall asleep behind the wheels. The major con is that you can have your breakfast while driving to work. :)
Stick shift are the only REAL drivers. Automatic are just passengers. Take a COURSE as it isn't something to just PICK UP its a skill to be learnt!
I've driven automatic all my life so far and have been curious as to what it's like to drive stick shift. Is it hard as it sounds what's your first experience with a stick shift car? I've heard some stories that it's hard when compared to an automatic. I've also heard that one kid destroyed his dad's transmission by releasing or pressing the clutch pedal too hard. I've always wanted to try a stick shift to increase my driving experience but I'm afraid if I try one one day I'll damage the transmission especially if it's an antique.
