You got there before the magic elevator mechanic. He is the guy who runs around changing the buttons on the elevators to remove the button for the floor it is already on. Next time wait for him to come and make the change otherwise you'll never get where you're going.
Most elevators are dumb. They have no voice.
The rest just reitterate the same music repeatedly.
They all have a button for every floor, it is up to you to choose the proper button to push.
That's so you can change your mind and stay where you are.
