What is the height of the larger cone?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
The larger cone has a radius of 7 the height is x. The smaller cone has a radius of 4 and a height of 5. They are similar cones. What is the height of the larger cone? PLEASE HELP!

ANS: x = 8.75(unit)

work:

Let ABC be the cross section of the larger cone where B be the vertex and point A and C lies on the circumference of the base. Let O be the center of the base.

Likewise let A'B' and C' be the cross section of the smaller cone where B' be the vertex and point A' and C' lies on the circumference of the base.

Consider triangle OBC and triangle OC'B':

OB'/B'C' = OB/BC or

5/4 = x/7 or

x = 7*5/4 = 8.75

Simple. The calculation is X=7/4*5

Therefore x=8.75.

The larger fine has a height of 8
