To go through all 27 gears, means all the planetary gears, and stuff like that. To tear down and rebuild a transmission will usually cost $1500-3000, so $700 is an inspection fee, which is reasonable. It is also very possible that the A/C compressor has issues. That's about $150 wholesale.
You can buy perfectly good transmissions from salvage yards, or rebuilders. I've had some amazing luck with them.
I wonder who this was that is the tech for your car, and what he would say. It is very difficult to understand transmission issues and that's why they have specialists.
It does sound like your terminology may be a little mixed up since you had that conversation.
You should ask further questions till you understand, and, or, look up your trans model at thew library in a reference book so you can really see what they mean, what they are facing, and why it is so intricate.
First question. "What is meant by an AC piston please?"
Bet that one was jumbled up info for sure.
Perhaps he said "apply piston" ? who can guess?
Hi RUN AWAY from that shop... 24 gears is bull sh... AC piston Bull Sh... We could have helped if you had stated what the car is doing.. but That shop is jerking you around.. RUNNNN
