Mechanical Engineering. It's the mother of all Engineering streams and after completing B.tech, you can specialize in automobile engineering from a reputed institute. However in the end, it's all your choice about what you want to study. You should listen to what everyone has to say and in the end, make your own choice.

"people" are correct, automotive is simply an application of Mechanical. You will have more skill. Ultimately you will have to make your choice based on your fluency in English or German.
i would recommend you to chose mechanical engineering
i am interested in automobiles and machinery, and have a passion to pursue a career in it. In India, automobile engineering do not have scope. so people told me to do mechanical with specialization in automobile. but i think i heading OVERSEAS now either to Germany or Australia. so what should i choose there. automobile or mechanical(auto) ? please help!
