Rear drum brake cylinder leak?

You either need to replace the whole cylinder or buy a rebuild kit (new pistons seals etc, and rebuild the cylinder (you will need a hone to smooth out the bore and be pretty savvy with keeping everything clean and lubed going back together - not a hard job but it would be good to have some experience).

I have done it both ways - but honestly for a few dollars more a new wheel cyclinder is so much quicker and cleaner - unless there is some high dollar difference between a kit and wheel cylinder complete (remember you will need a three finged hone to attach to a drill) I would go with a ready to install wheel cylinder.

Lastly - there is a very good chance the bleed valve on the old cylinder is rusted fast - so check that first before deciding between a rebuild or a replacement cylinder because if you can't open the bleed valve you will need to go with a new wheel cylinder.

The rubber boot at the ends of the wheel cylinder is not causing the leak. The sleeve around the piston is causing the leak. You need a new wheel cylinder. It's leaking because the water-logged brake fluid has never been changed!

Leaks, although common, aren't generally normal. You should make an effort to fix it.

Replace it. They cost about $10.

No it is not normal no fluid should be leaking at all as this allows air in to the system making it dangerous, the wheel cylinder needs replacing and the system needs bleeding unless you are confident take it to a garage

you will need to replace it...... at one time it was more cost effective to try and rebuild them but now its not! they are relatively inexpensive, but a pain to put in if you don't have the proper tools..... good luck

yeah it's leaking alright

my 2006 corolla is leaking from the rubber part of the drum brake cylinder.. Is that normal or do I need to replace it?? and if I do need to replace it, would I have to get a whole new cylinder or just replace the rubber part? thanks in advance
