Question on car battery - charging?

The belt(s) can be worn. If the battery is new alternator is new, but one of the belts are worn it will slip and not charge the battery properly. I recently had a car were I was having power steering issues. The pump was new, the belt was new. it ran great for a week and the problem slowly returned and now the battery was dying too. Well the other belt was falling apart. And that belt was responsible for the alternator AND turning the pulley that turned the power steering pump belt. After replacing that both issues disappeared.

if it will run after a jump, the alternator still has the potential to have failed but drive it to a shop and have the starting and charging system tested. batteries do not last for ever. factory, 5-6 years and after market is 4-5 as a projected life span.

Rater than leave it 'ticking over'....Give it a 5 mile spin down the road, a better way to charge the battery.

You obviously have an underlying problem that needs looking at though.

it takes about 10-15 minutes to charge the battery up enough to start the car again. Usually driving from A to B after your jumpstart is enough ,you don't have to sit and idle... unless you were only going down the street. The battery will charge up slower if you are using a lot of accessories while driving; ex: headlights, radio, accessory outlets (cigarette lighter)

If you had to call a roadside service and pay for a jumpstart... I would go ahead and just buy a portable booster. They cost about 60-70 dollars. Calling roadside assistance or auto rescue for just a jumpstart costs about $75. the first time you need it, its paid for itself. A lot of them also have tire inflators on them too. I've used mine dozens of times this year to boost myself and other people and to get me going again when tire goes flat.

30 minutes of (even idle engine) is good enough. it will charge your battery well. If it's not charging then there's something wrong with your Alternator or Electronic Fuse.

before going somewhere where you might get stranded,i would let it run about 30 minutes and try starting.

remember: there IS something wrong that required the jump in the first place....you need yo get it identified & repaired.

hello

i recently had to jumpstart my car and i was advise to let it running (not even idle) for sometime before i can turn off..

is there any specific time period that i should keep it running so that i can take on itws own even if turn off and restart the ignition.

or how do i know that the battery is charged enough to start on itws own again.

say, i got a less than yr old battery...and alternator is good too.
