Their are a few things that could cause major oil loss. You could have a hole in your oil pan from a stick or branch crashing into it, or you could have broken an oil cooler line going to your radiator. I would get those two things checked seeing as it's leaking out over night.
Warning! Never start your car if it has little or no oil in it, results could cause major mechanical failure.
Check for oil leaks in the oil crankcase. Maybe something hit it and broke it loose. In worst case you gonna need to replace the oil crankcase and joint. Not very expensive and can be DIY.
I'll bet if you put some oil it and crawled under there with a flashlight in hand, you'd find the cause of it. This would eliminate guesses.
You might want to check if the oil pan is cracked, or the drain plug has come loose.
its the gigleing pin come loose on the end of the laughing shaft, at a guess, may be a year, model type would help with a better answer
the check oil light came on yesterday morning, and i checked and it was bone dry, so i put in a few quarts. when i went out today, there was a puddle, and it was again not even registering on the dipstick. I put some more oil in, but it is leaking severely. I was wondering what could be the cause, and how much the repair might cost?
Also, i was out at a friends cabin a few days ago, leaving here was where i first saw the check oil light. The road is very rough, and there was a wind storm that night, so there were sticks and logs down everywhere. I avoided all the large logs and sticks, but it was impossible to miss them all, and the next morning was when it was dry, so i think this might be a possible cause.
