Fuel filter. Fuel pump [listen for the buzz sound when you turn the key before cranking] Could be low on fuel and gauge isn't reading correctly. Could be a sensor [crank position senor, cam position senor] failed and is not sending a signal to the computer. Could be girlfriend put sugar or salt in your gas tank. Unlikely engine seized so if you check the oil and it is ok go for simple things. Ultimately a quality Toyota dealer will be your best bet. Tell them you want a "make do" repair, manage their expectations [don't use the I'm a poor college student pitch as the service advisor needs to pay for his kid's college tuition by selling repairs]
You do know you have to put gas in it don't you?
Just kidding, BUT out of fuel may be the issue!
When a vehicle shuts off immediately, it is usually an electrical (ignition) fault or catastrophic failure.
When it gradually slows and stops, it is usually traced to a fuel issue, either out of gas, bad fuel pump, or filter. Certain sensors are considered in the "fuel stream) sort of, such as MAP, IAC, and such.
Did the check engine light come on? If yes, that may point to the trouble, if not, then fuel pump or filter is highly suspect!
Sounds like you seized the motor.. hows the oil level and coolant? have any other issues recently to contribute to this?
*More than likely your fuel filter is plugged! It should be changed every 50,000 miles.
