Is my transmission slipping?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
before the mechanic "adds" anything to it did he check for any codes. might have a 1870 code which means a slip and with that amount of miles I expect the torque converter slipping. which means transmission out. next question is whens the emission test due on the car since that code will fail the test. any additives to a transmission with a problem can and sometimes has expedited the loss of the transmission completely. find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help

Well sense the transmission is going out, the only advice would be to rebuild the transmission, get another car or start walking. The mechanic can add something (whatever that will be) but it is going to quit sooner or later.

Your car has a lock-up torque converter. There is only one clutch band in it so it is only applied when you are in overdrive with very light throttle. Any small rise in the highway causes increase of power and the converter will unlock during this time. In other words, everything is fine.

I can only think of 2 possibilities off the top of my head.

1. You're low on transmission fluid.

2. The torque converter is slipping, causing the problem you're experiencing.

Sounds like your mechanic might be adding something made by Lucas. It's good depending on how bad your problem is to begin with. In your case, the stuff may not help. I hope this helps you.

There will be a trouble code for what's wrong when you get an OBD2 code check done. Go ahead and do that.

2002 Oldsmobile Alero 240k miles. Running apx 70-75 mph rpms at 2.5 suddenly jump to 3 rpms. Sometimes I notice a jerk and the rpm gauge is doing a similar thing when I'm not going as fast. My mechanic is going to add something to it Friday.... is this a lost cause? I really don't know what to do! I don't want to throw lots of money into this car but I also don't want to buy a new car....any advice? Thank you!
