Is it easy/cheap to install a catalytic converter?

My Mitsubishi Mirage GLX 1988 does not have one, so how much would it cost to install one?

I called a local shop and they wanted $800 to replace the catalytic converter. I found a direct fit catalytic converter online for $159 (free shipping). The part was an exact fit except for there was no hanger on the new converter. The bolts on the front of the converter were rusted solid and were tough to break loose. The spring loaded bolts on the rear of the converter came off with no problems.. New bolts and gaskets cost about $30.

No such thing as harmless soot. And if you can find a cat converter for $100, I'm all in. Cat converters cost a minimum of $300, up to $1,200. Easy to put in if the rest of the exhaust is brand new. Really hard if you're trying to fit it into rusty parts.

They are about $100 and labor another $100.

But don't do it.

Catalytic converters are terrible because they turn harmless soot into toxic cyanates, formalins, and sulfites.

Find a used one for a few hundred and have a shop cut/weld it into the exhaust for 150

Easy but not cheap.
