Cars can be started in 2 ways. Hot wire or bypassing the security system. Alot of the newer high tech cars, like MB or Lexuses, can be stated w/ out a key if the thief has the proper bypass tools. On older, spartan cars they can simply crack the column open and hot wire it.
Hot wiring is old school. Pro car thieves do it the modern way with code stealing remotes and basically forcing the ignition switch or programmable transponder keys. Your Mazda is not that hi-tech compared to BMW, Mercedes, Lexus etc. but those cars get stolen as well.
Did you lend your car to anyone? They could have made a copy of the key, and stole it in the middle of the night. If you live with other students they could have taken the key or it got towed.
Could have been towed. Being that it is a front wheel drive, the rear wheels are free so someone could have towed. And your right. Hot wiring is next to impossible now adays
So I'm a freshmen in high college and I live in a dormitory. I drive a 2010 Mazda 3 and yesterday morning my car was not in its assigned parking spot. I couldn't believe it!!! (Still can't). I looked all over the campus for it and I don't think I even saw one other Mazda!! So finally I accepted the fact that it had been stolen and reported it. I can't figure out how in the **** this happened. There were no keys in the car, the car was locked and I hear its near impossible to hot wire cars now days. What other way could some thief had got it started and drove off?????
