Glasspacks are the cheapest muffler option. Cutting the pipes off is the absolute cheapest. From what you say, Flowmasters will be too much because glasspacks are dirt cheap and you want cheaper than that. The cats will provide a little flow restriction, but glasspacks are still better. The number one advantage of glasspacks is actually having a "muffler" on your truck when police start hassling you.

Headers really help the sound.

You do realise the louder it sounds the more gas it uses just same when you put on a big bore exhauset up goes gas consumption and no speed.

They sell glass pack cherry exhausts at the auto parts store very cheap and you can put them on yourself. Thing is if you have emissions testing in your state or inspection car won't pas without mufflers like your friend said.
