Help, thermostat is fixed, but the car still overheats?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
So you went to an autoparts store(NAPA)-that just sell autoparts and a tire store(FIRESTONE)...that just sells tires.

The other 2 were? If they claimed to be mechanics, they were guys that ripped you off.(in other words...NOT mechanics) This is not a difficult problem. Even on a "mystery car"

Do you SEE the PROBLEM YET? Yer an idiot.(and I am talking nicely) On the street, I really would have told you you are a Loser retard (but I am not allowed to say those words here, so I will not say that.

Maybe try a mechanical repair shop...oh, you must have buddies, so somebody may recommend somebody...specifically.

It is a wonder NAPA did not sell you the entire engine and suspension parts, body parts and electrical because they have everything, including paint.

Even they need to know the make and year of CAR you got...as not every car part is the same for every car.

We are stuck looking at a blank screen. You car could be a "Fred Flintstone mobile" We have no way of knowing any different.

So ask the question again with the necessary info....I want to know the 4 mechanics AND need to know the make and model and year and engine type or size of your car. It is on your registration papers.

Call again because until then you remain parked.

You could remove the thermostat completely and reassemble the car back together and it will not overheat. Also does not heat up inside the car until you have driven 10 miles at Freeway speeds, then it starts to get warm inside. By that time chances are you got to park the car cause you have reached your destination. So it cools down again. But solved the overheating problem.

Cars cost; and you are learning through your wallet the pains of owning one. You just need a bigger wallet.

In order that you decided on any autoparts store(NAPA)-that only just distribute autoparts along with get rid of store(FIRESTONE)... which usually only just is sold tires.

One another some happen to be? Assuming they alleged that should be aspects, they were boys which usually ripped you will shut off. (in other sorts of sayings... NOT LIKELY mechanics) Marriage ceremony an arduous condition. Still about the "mystery car"

Ever Look at CONDITION AT THIS POINT? Yer any idiot. (and Now i'm babbling nicely) Relating to the lane, Prefer could possibly have assured you will you can be a fabulous Loss slow down (but Now i'm not allowed to share many sayings right, i absolutely isn't going to tell you which usually.

Its possible get a clockwork repair shop... oh yea, you'll want best friends, for that reason people will probably urge people... actually.

Sanctioned marvel NAPA will not distribute you will the generator and additionally suspension locations, areas of the body and additionally energy when they experience the whole thing, for example application.

Still they ought to be aware of all the earn and additionally month about VAN you've got... like not every van a part certainly is the equal with regard to van.

People are swamped viewing a fabulous reject show. You will van generally is a "Fred Flintstone mobile" There is no chance about discovering whatever varied.

For that reason demand all the topic once along with the appropriate knowledge.... I have to be aware of all the have a look at aspects AND ADDITIONALLY require all the earn and additionally device and additionally month and additionally generator choice or possibly proportions on your van. It's always upon your plate press.

Speak to once as unless you stay on left.

You are able to take away the thermostat utterly and additionally reassemble the car lower back at the same time and additionally you will not regret overheat. Equally doesn't necessarily warm around the van and soon you experience made 10 mileage located at The road speeds, afterward the software takes place to generate snug throughout. Just by that time then you arrived at woodland the car reason you've gotten contacted any choice. Since it cools off once. Still fixed all the overheating condition.

Motor vehicles amount; while you really are getting to know with any credit card all the painful sensations about purchasing a. Notebook need a much bigger credit card.

Radiator.

Air in cooling system.

Water pump.

Wrong thermostat, or thermostat installed upside down.

Cooling fan(s).

Do you have a temperature gauge?

If so, and you kept the car continuously moving, like on a highway, and the car didn't overheat, but it overheats in stop and go traffic, I would check the cooling fan(s).

When the car is overheating, will heat blow out of your heater?

Last but not least, if you drove the car into an overheated condition, then kept on driving, you likely warped the cylinder head and the head gasket no longer seals properly. This will be an expensive repair, and teaches a valuable lesson: When the overheat light comes on, or the temperature gauge indicates overheat, you pull off the road immediately, and shut off the engine. IMMEDIATELY!! Is this what happened? You kept driving it while was overheated?

Take the car to a radiator shop (not a car repair shop). They are experts.

They can determine if:

1. The radiator is clogged with lime deposits

2. Exhaust is leaking into the coolant.

3. Coolant is too low.

4. Fan clutch is defective

5. Fan blades broken or missing

6. Something is obstructing the air flow through the radiator.

7. The radiator is too small or too thin (perhaps lacking an extra tier).

8. The timing is off (distributor rotated to wrong location, perhaps because the harmonic balancer slipped so the timing marks are off).

9. New thermostat is defective or jammed (perhaps improperly installed).

10. The upper radiator hose collapses because the metal spring inside rusted and collapsed. This pinches closed the flow of water. The lower hose doesn't pinch as much.

11. Etc.

Thumbs to M, but add to support, are your fans working? A fan not working could also be the culprit. Run car (with A/C off) and see if fan turns on. If it doesn't, there's your issue. Then you'll need to fnd out why it's not working.

@ Everyone else. There are some really good answers here but insulting the OP is unwarranted. If he knew what was going on, he wouldn't be asking. Obviously, he is aware of the unreliable answers he has received or he wouldn't be asking us.

With that said, OP, you need to tell us what make and model your car is and what has been done already. This is very important in diagnosing this. We can only give ideas of what could be causing the issue at this point.

Btw, OP means Original Poster, in case you didn't know.

Accomplish this, although driving a car about, flip your current water heater with entire great time, really does the actual technical staffing , drop? In the event that it will, let the vehicle cool off. While using engine great, wide open the actual radiator limit, flip your vehicle with and also allow it to go warm-up. In the event that this exhibits sizzling, and also you include an abundance of water inside radiator which is planning by means of fast, then you'll need a brand new radiator. Water will be skipping the center wherever it requires to venture to maintain engine great. Any time you don't work with coolant and also as well as in no way eliminate the actual radiator, the center turns into rocked up. I might suggest any dual key radiator from your elements look. Definitely not the actual dealer. When it comes to electric motor, understand checked to see should your scalp gasket hasn't already supplied, when it offers, you will note gas inside water as well as a lot of heavy steam thru your current end conduit as well as comming outside the engine these types of.

Damn, why do you guys have to be such pricks? All because he knows nothing about working on cars you have to break his balls and tease him? I'd pay anything to see him treat you the same way if you had to ask him about ur computer. What makes you so high and mighty that you get to lord over people because you have knowledge of cars? I'm an A mechanic in HVAC and I'd never treat anyone that I do not know like that if I was asked a question. People use this web site because they need help, not to be treated like the new kid in a 5th grade school. Grow up you small penis having little girls.

Try this, while driving around, turn your heater on full blast, does the temp go down? If it does, let the car cool off. With the engine cool, open the radiator cap, turn the car on and let it warm up. If it shows hot, and you have plenty of water in the radiator and it is going by fast, then you need a new radiator. The water is bypassing the middle where it needs to go to keep your engine cool. When you do not use coolant and or never flush the radiator, the middle becomes plugged up. I recommend a double core radiator from a parts shop. Not the dealership. As for the motor, get it checked to see if your head gasket hasn't blown, if it has, you will see oil in the water or lots of steam thru your tail pipe or comming out of the engine bay.

So here we have a person that wants help but never tells us the year, make, model and motor size of their vehicle. They went to a NAPA and to Firestone (a tire store). Where did they get the idea real mechanics worked at either of those places?! Guess you can't fix stupid! There are thousands of small repair garages around the country with ex-dealer mechanics that have been factory trained and have years of experience. Really...Firestone? They can't even make a tire that is round and balances out!

I would take it to a Recommended Auto repair shop in your area and first have them do the Engine Compression Test to see if you have a leaking Head Gasket or some other problem with the Motor that would be potentially expensive.... If they say the motor is Ok.... then the overheating is some less costly maintenance task such as water pump, thermostat (it may be installed incorrectly or the wrong one),radiator, pressure cap,fan clutch or relay or fan motor, coolant may be bad or too low level, etc. Also, if its just the Water Pump then it may or may not be too expensive to fix because it all depends on design of how the pumps in place. -Best of luck !

I have taken the car to 4 different mechanics (one was napa and the other was firestone).. they fixed a lot of parts and it costed a lot of money but in the end the car still overheats.. what could to problem be? I have no money now and can't drive my car.

With it said the thermostat replaced, here is a remaining list of potential problems that can cause overheating. Knowing what parts have been replaced would help.

Low coolant

Faulty water pump (coolant leaks from shaft seal)

Air bubble in cooling system

Clogged radiator or heater core

Loose belt on water pump

Blown head gasket

You must get the testing performed by competent engine repair technicians, or return to where they worked on it already.

Since they were responsible to recommend adequate testing, it is now up to you, to return to them and get the correct answers after thorough testing.

They can even recommend more competent help after learning you are still having your problem.

If you told the info, you could get several "educated guesses" on this webpage, but hands-on testing and the actions to take must be determined in person getting your trouble codes, a leakdown test of the system, internal and external engine leakdown, I mean,

Verify correct operation of your system and its related systems that can cause an engine to overheat.

Your GM dealer is of course, the best educated and experienced with whatever powerplant is in your vehicle.

They also have info that other sources may not.

The price of a new engine clearly tells you that you need expert help, or the most experienced you can arrange.

You must be sixteen years old with an even older vehicle and very little knowledge as to car cooling systems. You rely on other ignorant teens for information and you have been victimized by people you think are mechanics. Firestone and NAPA are names that must be capitalized. That gives your age away. Thermostats very rarely cause overheats for thermostats when they fail cause the engine to run COOLER than normal. One child driver REFUSED to believe this simple principle and went through three thermostats. It has been said that one sign of insanity is to do the same thing and to expect different results. One other fellow changed the radiator, the water pump, the thermostat, the hoses and still the car overheated. You see, cars are complex heat machines and engineers go through very difficult principles and engineering issues to control that monster. Over 74% of the energy in gasoline is wasted as heat and noise. Each explosion to generate mechanical motion in a piston creates temperatures over 2,500 degrees. The explosions can be 10 to 20 times per second per cylinder depending on the revolutions. No one here could possibly provide more than more guesses and guessing nor ignorance has ever repaired a car. The list of possibilities is quite extensive. If you rather not spend more money on this unidentified vehicle, buy another one. If you car to learn about cars, then you must dig into the Internet to lean how the cooling system of cars work. The pressure, the motion, the quantity of fluid, the chemical composition, the airflow over the engine and radiator, the weight of the car, the ratio of the transmission, and lots more. In other words, an engineer or a mechanic. Short of that, only a trained, experienced and talented mechanic can check out each component. No guessing is allowed. But this American kid texting based thing that engines overheat due to the thermostat must end, must be finished, must be terminated. By the way, a "car" can be anything. Please identify the vehicle properly. Year, make, model, engine, transmission, miles, etc. must be included.

you dont say what the mechanics have done for the money you've spent but it sounds like "not much"

Overheating can be :- thermostat, water pump, radiator clogged, low coolant, air bubble in system, head gasket blown, wrong air fuel mixture, over tight exhaust valves, timing retarded, slipping fan/water pump belt, electric fan not working.

A competent mechanic should be able to rule most of these out in 10 minutes & check for the rest fairly quickly as well.

Obviously Napa and Firestone have NO troubleshooting capabilities. First thing is stuck thermostat. Not bleeding the cooling system. If it has v-belts, a loose belt. A bad water pump. Clogged radiator. Coolant leak (should be obvious). Wrong fuel mixture. Bat timing. Loose or slipped timing belt. Some expensive options would be bad head gasket, bad intake gasket, cracked head, or cracked block.

You might have a big air bubble in your cooling system. An air bubble will block the flow of coolant causing the system to over heat. There are other potential problems but the thing to do is to call the people who worked on you car last and scream bloody murder. If you make a big enough stink they will fix the problem.

It could be many things; most likely not air bubble, the water pump, the heater core could be corroded or the radiator could be corroded , your head gasket could be failing allowing no pressure to be able to build.

Not that it will help now, but ask around then only bring your car to the "best" local auto repair shop even if it costs a little more than Napa.

It could be air. Before starting the car in the morning, open the radiator and plug the hose to it for about 20 minutes. Let water run so it gets out the air pockets.

What's the year make and model of your car so we can compare it to others who are having the same problem.

When was the last time that the cooling system was drained, flushed and CLEANED to get the corrosion, rust abs scale out?

If the cooling system is clean your next step would be to have an inexpensive *cooling system pressure test done which will find any external or internal leaks.

Hi

check the timing does it have power to go uphill? if yes then... the radiator may be clogged, or the clutch to the fan gave out look for the belt it may be slipping and finally the water pump sometimes the impelent (the thing inside that pushes the water ) is made of plastic and detaches or brakes.

When you do not use coolant and or never flush the radiator, the middle becomes plugged up. I recommend a double core radiator from a parts shop. Not the dealership. As for the motor, get it checked to see if your head gasket hasn't blown, if it has, you will see oil in the water or lots of steam thru your tail pipe or comming out of the engine bay. www, cheapimport,co

N

yes

Replace the hoses that are connected at the top of the radiator and at the bottom and that may solve your problem, if they are old. They may be blocked by a foriegn object.

Need to know year and motor and model. If it has an aluminum head by now it is cracked. Does it smoke out tail pipe and is it white smoke.? Do an compression check on motor.

WOW LOTS OF ANSWERS (SIMPLE) TAKE RADIATOR CAP OFF START CAR LOOK IN RADIATOR AFTER 3 OR4 MINUTES SEE IF WATER IS CIRULATING IF NOT WATER PUMP OR THERMOSTAT BAD remove thermostat try again if not circulating then its water pump
