For a beginner with no intentions of going beyond hobby welder I would fully recommend an auto darkening helmet from Harbor Freight, which has a slightly slower response time to arc than say a Miller hood but is a decent tool for the novice/hobby welder. I would recommend getting the warranty, because it is Harbor Freight. Also, I would get a good deal of lenses and lens cleaner spray, as they will get dirty from spatter and will affect his ability to make quality welds.
I have more trouble with the head band breaking than trouble with the lenses. I would recommend one with a sturdy headband. I have had my helmet for 20 years and haven't replaced the lenses. (although they do need changed). But, have put 2 headbands on it. Mine has narrow lenses on it, but a square one would be nicer. Anyway that's my experience.
I've just asked my dad who is a welding lecturer, he said there mostly the same
I bought my husband a welder for his birthday. He is no pro, nor will he ever be so this isn't his day job. I'm sure he just wants to dabble in the garage with it. I am looking for a good but relatively inexpensive helmet to go with it. I have found some at Crappy Tire and TSC (TSC has a Hobart on sale this week) and have read some basic articles on what to look for in a helmet. My problem is that I am having a hard time finding replacement lenses. I don't want to buy him a helmet where I can't easily source lenses without paying an arm and a leg for shipping or exchange rates from the U.S.
Anyone able to help a girl out with some ideas/advice? Thanks in advance! :)
