Electrical problem with light switch?

There is a connection that is already rusting. We recommend that you immediately change

First off with all electricity, when you are working on or near exposed cables (bare copper), or are about to expose any cables, then turn the power off. Prove that the power is off before you start.

I am not sure how the dimmer broke - if it stopped working then that is one thing, if there was mechanical damage to the actual switch then that is another.

So if the dimmer switch breaking meant simply that the light wouldn't turn on then the switch might have been OK and the problem could have been somewhere else in the wiring. If you have replaced the switch with a new one and replaced the bulb by a new one then this suggests there is something at fault in the wiring. Again with the power off it might be worth taking the light down from the ceiling and making sure all the connections are there and tightly done up.

You might be able to show this by connecting the red and blue together using a proper connection block and seeing if when you turn the power on the bulb lights up - is not then the cables or something is at fault, if it does then the problem is with the switch or how the switch is connected.,

If the dimmer and the light worked before "it [the dimmer] broke and if now "the blue has power [i.e. voltage] but the red does not," then the switch is meant to switch the voltage onto the red lead.

You might want cap the red and blue leads together to see that the bulb lights.

and/or with the switch wired to the red and blue wires

You might want to use your tester to see if the switch is switching the voltage.

If the switch is switching the voltage and the bulb doesn't light, consider the possibility that the bulb, nd/or the socket, and/or the red wiring is bad.

If the switch isn't switching the voltage and you don't blow a fuse/circuit-breaker, consider the possibility that the switch is bad.

. If there is power why is there nothing when i put a switch there. (there is also a wee black box on the red cable).

Maybe the black box is a fuse.

Call a electrian

Hi my light switch was a dimmer, it broke so capped the cables. Tryed another switch (not a dimmer) but nothing happened (even tryed different bulbs). I have an elcetrical test screw driver so i tested the circuit (its the old style red and blue) the blue has power but the red does not. If there is power why is there nothing when i put a switch there. (there is also a wee black box on the red cable).

Thanks
