Electrical engineering for girls?

..lots of people are against my decision and I just wanted someone else's input into this..

Do it.

Schools are trying hard to get girls into engineering, which is a field dominated by men. Some companies are still in the dark ages where much of the engineering staff does not like the idea of women being equal to them.

I personally find a girl in engineering attractive because she would understand me better and be able to have an educated conversation with me instead of just talking about the Kardashians or Jershey shore or celebrities. That is why I proposed to my best friend, engineering classmate, and girlfriend soon after meeting her.

Facts: Some good, some bad.

-Girls have an advantage over men in getting engineering jobs. Companies are trying to diversify their staff, but that is hard to do with such a shortage of women engineers. They usually hire a new female engineer over a more experience male engineer for that reason.

-Women generally get paid less then men. But that goes for every profession.

-Lots of guys may hit on you in your career or you may experience sexist remarks.

-You need to show guys how tough you are. Don't back down on your decisions and projects and don't let others discourage you. They will respect you in time.

Electrical Engineering, or any engineering, is a great field. Stable comfortable income for a family of 4, good work/life balance, and lots of respect gained.

My aunt met my fiance this past weekend. When she asked my fiance where she works, my fiance said Volvo Trucks in manufacturing. My Aunt said "Are you a secretary there?". We both felt offended, but my aunt was shocked when we said she is the engineer and project manager.

("electrical engineering for girls? ... lots of people ...")

Lots of people are not going to be living your life for you; you will be living it, not them. You don't say how old you are or why your interested in electrical engineering, but if you are motivated by it, make it happen.

Actually, your timing would be excellent as lots of women are breaking into the field of science and engineering and are doing quite well at it, you should too. Electrical engineering is an excellent choice for a career. The work is challenging and pays very well. Because of the level of mathematics required to get a BSEE degree in electrical engineering, some students will do 5 years to complete a 4 year program, which is ok as that degree is well worth the extra effort.

Go for it. I'm a Chemical engineer with about 30 years experience. There's no reason you can't excel as an Electrical engineer. There are lots of jobs Electrical engineers do that aren't physical if that even was a reason not to do it (and it's not). We have about 15 chemical engineers in the office where I work and about 1/2 of them are women.

The field of electrical engineering has many female participants. If you are interested in electrical engineering as a career then by all means go for it. the minor is math which scares many people of both flavors away but if you want to tackle it DO IT. You will find lots of support in doing that.

Do not let the negative attitudes of others deter you from what you wish to do.

Forget about "lots of people"'s opinions. They probably think you should stay home, have kids, and wait impatiently for your husband to come home.

It's YOUR life. It has to be YOUR decision. If you like electrical engineering, DO IT.

I'm going to be starting mechanical engineerimg in he fall. And while its not normal, if its wjat u want to do, go forit! Idk a lot about electrical, but ik that a girl could do it just as well in most cases, idt it onvolves a ton of heavy lifting. That's just for those who say I woudnt be steong enough. Good luck to u! Idt theres anythong wromg with it.

Do you have a particular specialization in mind yet?

I say ignore those who are against your decision.
