Rust on the rims can cause an air leak, the tire gradually goes flat, and driving with a mostly flat tire can cause a blowout.
Of course it was also a used tire, and you don't know how it was treated before you got it. Tire shop would have given it a visual inspection and ensured it "looked" OK before they sold it. But that doesn't 100% mean it's good.
Hence they have replaced it for free because it's hard to pin down the exact reason.
Anything's possible, but I think it's more likely that the tire failed because the tire was faulty/damaged in some way before it was put on your car. It was a used tire. Tires can withstand punishment/impact that ruins them without obvious outward signs of the seriousness of the damage they've sustained. You really don't know and have no way OF knowing if a used tire has sustained that kind of damage prior to putting it on your car. If you ask me there are better and far safer places to cut costs in your life than by purchasing used tires instead of new tires when you need tires.
look over the paperwork first. if the tech, service writer or cashier mentioned nothing, that can be an issue. a bare rim should show the evidence of damage, rust o what ever lead to the issue. dried rubber can be a big factor also. i have to wonder if there is a warranty on parts and labor. if you did not go that far, warranty should cover it as it did.
They sold you a dry rotted tire and were hiding the fact. I give them credit for replacing the tire for free, though. Have someone check the other tires.
You can do it yourself by looking closely at the sidewall for small hairline cracks in the rubber. Usually close to the tread.
Sure, very feasible. If the rim is rusted the tire bead cannot properly adhere to the rim properly.
Umm no absolutely not, old rims will not cause that.
Over or under inflated tires could cause a blowout; used dry rotted tires will also blowout.
If the old wheel runs true it will be fine to use. It will NOT cause a tire to blow - out.
lanab and g have it right. give one of them the best answer.
I bought used winter tires and few days later the one of the tires blow out in high way on my way to work.I took the tire back to shop and they replaced it for free. Then they said the reason it happened was because my rims are old and rusted? I know nothing about cars so I am not sure if this is true
