Try advanced auto parts or autozone for a free scan. It could be 1 of about 30 sensors. Check engine doesn't mean your car is going to blow up. It means one of the sensors in the engine that monitor the performance of the car has gone bad. Most of the time it is an 02 sensor, map sensor, speed sensor or idle sensor. But these are just a few. There are many more. My jeep light came on and fixed it myself last week. It needed a battery temperature sensor of all sensors.
Most American car sensors are not expensive. Most are in the $60 range or less unless it is a map sensor which can be $400. But on a ford its usually the cheap $30 to $60 ones. Some auto parts stores can scan it free for you and tell you the code so you buy the part off them. At least in Florida it's like that. Read up on reading codes on your car. My jeep codes read by turning ignition off and on fast 3 times. My corvette I can read codes by using a paperclip in the diagnostic connector and counting the check flashes
Autozone, Advance, O'Reilly's, and almost every other major parts house will scan it for free.

Your car requires a diagnostic scan to see what fault codes have been stored, which in turn will point the technician in the right direction as to a repair.
It is very rarely possible to take an educated guess as to why the engine management light is illuminated, as generally, there are no outward signs, apart from maybe bad running / uneven idle / strange noises/ etc, however, they can illuminate when a problem arises which does not necessarily display any signs or symptoms, such as a worn catalytic converter for example.
Have a scan carried out and put your mind at rest.

I have a 2006 Ford Fusion. I had checked all the fluids. I bought it from a dealer, and everything was fine, except the check engine light. I told them I wouldn't purchase it unless they fixed the problem so they did and the check engine light was gone and that was 2 months and 2 thousand miles later. The car is running perfectly fine right now. Do you suggest I take it to a shop to get it fixed and to what the problem is ?
