Car squealing when taking off?

If you can push or pull the serpentine belt *more than 1/8 inch between the two widest two pulleys with the engine off you need a new serpentine belt tensioner.

We got it.. I think. He's in school for automotive and knows what he's doing.. He's just not a pro yet and I'm one of those gfs that asks other people to too make sure lol. We was thinking it was the surpentine belt so we kept tightening it and it kept squeeking so now we did the alternator belt and it hasn't done it again so far. But thank y'all

Sounds like the belt just needs tightened. These cars today need the belts to be quite tight, or they slips. The old cars the belts would have done damage if as tight as they need today.

very simple, the belt is loose. on the old v belts, it was a simple occurrence. on a serpentine belt makes it a bit harder as long as it is a spring loaded type. if it is the type that with a worm drive type of tensioner, it could be loose. it is also possible to have the belt routed wrong on an engine that uses a serpentine belt.

If its a serpentine belt, its probably a bad idler pulley or tensioner. Only of course if the belt was put on properly. If a v belt, it probably needs retightened.

More than likely a slipping fan, air-co, alternator, or power-steering belt. Tensioning the belt is a cheap short term fix, but better get it checked, and replace the belt, for the added piece of mind, should not be too costly

The alternator belt is not tight enough. or the driven pulley has worn sides and the v belt is bottoming . If the belt sits right down in the pulley it may be the pulley

since it only started after belt replacement its most likely we have excess play ..belt not tight enough.

recheck it. longest length ought to be able to twist between finger and thumb through 90 degrees and no more. . any more and its too loose.

we can have a bit less but if no twist is allowed to occur ? we risk excess tightness and thus premature bely wear and overloading ancillaries bearings e.g. alternator.

When alternator was replaced, the belt was not tightened enough.

belt tensioner

My boyfriend just replaced my alternator belt yesterday. It had started squealing the other night but not bad. Only when I cranked it. Now it does it when I crank the car and every time I stop at a stop sign or light and go to take off it does it. What could it be.

Get your b/f to put it right, he didn't do it tight enough
