What you need is an inquisitive mind that can accept a lot of contradictory data and information, and put it together in a way that no one else has before. As someone once put it: "necessity is the mother of invention"; so, to invent, you need to find a need and a way to meet that need specifically. Science helps in that you can start with what is known and a whole bunch of theories that make it easier to do the maths for calculations about how to make the invention as cheaply as possible and as safe as possible.
As for race - it's totally irrelevant.
Starting a company is not hard - it just takes having enough money and/or time to create the cash flow you need to stay alive while waiting for the "big break", and recognising when that big break comes your way.
BTW, remember that Tesla died broke.... And others made more money from his inventions than he did.
Electrical engineering is your best bet in my opinion. Learn to do patent searches on the US patent office website. This will save you a lot of time as millions of patents exist that are not commonly known to the public. Tesla was brilliant, you would have to have an extremely high IQ to match his skill. Edison was not well educated, but he knew how to come up with good ideas and pursue them endlessly with good people around him. In the USA of today, discrimination by race is a myth.
I would stick to a standard engineering line of study; electrical engineering would be a good choice, because it will allow you to apply knowledge across a wide range.
To be above average simply apply yourself; do science fairs and ask many questions. Your journal is a really good start.
I don't understand how discrimination would come into it at all. That's not to say it's easy; anything worthy requires effort; we all face challenges.
Good luck.
Let the world major and discriminate. You be you and just invent.
If the world attacks you at any level. You have succeeded. If it agrees with you you have won.
You are an African American? Once your dead will it really matter? In God We Blame. You are an African American. I am just the devil and if the World disagrees i have truly won.
I'm interested in computer engineering. Can I become an inventor/engineer with this major?
I'm interested in computer science/engineering/electrical engineering.
Also how can I be an above average inventor like Tesla and Thomas Edison?
I have a journal of invention ideas that I would like to make. Should I go with electrical engineering or computer engineering?
Also how much discrimination would I deal with if I tried to start my own company. I'm African American.
Best answer 10 points.
