Not exactly. These days, you need a degree in Industrial Design to do Industrial or Product Design.
Mechanical Engineers work in similar areas. They can work as Design engineers where they design mechanical components based on their knowledge of materials, stress, heat, torsion, compression, etc. An example is a bolt, nut, spring, screw, bracket, pipe, or piston.
ME's can also work as product development engineers, which is more project management based. They also work in designing mechanical components, but they also look at material costs, manufacturing processes, and the most cost effective way to make the product. This is a higher paying job than "Design Engineer" since there are more responsibilities attached to it.
Industrial Designs don't work on designing mechanical components. They design the "looks" of products whie maintaining a practical use of the product, ergonomics, and safety.
I think you can. You can even become a president or a pope. Seriously, the president of china and the pope are both engineers. :D
No, it is not.
I want to have the mechanical engineering degree, what would like to practice industrial and product design, is this a good path to take? I don't want to limit my options in case in industrial design degree doesn't work out for me, as I know the job prospects are poor at the moment.
Would you suggest another degree pathway or do you think this is a good pathway?
