Why no concern over the 40 psi low side? That would be a 45F evaporator temperature... and I bet the suction pipe is barely cool, like the vent temp. (If not it is a blend issue.)
But all that is academic. The system needs a professional service no matter how you slice it. Don't join the legion of people who use the destructo kits sold in stores - it turns out that a kit called "A/C Pro" does not make one an A/C pro - and damage their compressors. A few ounces too little starves the compressor for oil; a few ounces too much dribbles slugs of liquid refrigerant into the compressor where it has the same effect that chewing on rocks has on teeth. I gave away my gauges when we got rid of our last R12 car. There is nothing anybody can do with R134a without a fully equipped and trained refrigeration shop. It really is that different.
#1 Ambient should be taken 3-ft in front of radiator, not off the radio or TV.
#2 Pressures are NOT an accurate measure of how much refrigerant is in the system. The only way to get an exact charge is to evacuate and refill with a scale.
#3. Do a maximum heat load test. Read the article below on how to do one with an expansion valve system.
I'd say its over charged.
Change the expansion valve, refill the system with the correct WEIGHT charge of refrigerant and oil.
i would recover the system run a vacuum and re fill it.
Hello I have a question. I have a 96 Jeep XJ. My pressure on low side is 40 and high side is 275 ambient temp is 105F. Now my ac does not get cold center vent temp (lowest temp via thermometer) is 70 degrees. Visual inspection looks good no leaks and cannot spot leak detector anywhere. Removed blower inspected evap core looks new cleaned anyways. Took it to ac shop and tech said pressures were good he didn't see anything wrong. However, I found an FSM pressure chart and at 105F low side should be 50 high side 325. Initial pressures were taken with compressor cycling. I discussed my research with tech and he said that those FSM pressures are too high and I could mess up my compressor. Spoke to another tech he confirmed what tech one said. My issue is why would the FSM indicate something and then two techs say otherwise? I need some help here. Thanks!
