Brand new water pump leaking?

You shouldn't need to use sealant with a new gasket. Clean both surfaces smooth (pump and block) and make sure they are dry when you put the pump back in place. Torque the bolts to the mfg recommended lbs. The only reason it would leak like this is if there was a crack in the pump housing or the block.

When you add sealant to a gasket, like silicone and don't let it set up for a proper amount of time (8-12hrs I would guess), when you fire the car back up and pressure builds it just squishes the wet silicon out of the gaps between the gasket and block/pump.

Yes you can try again. Get new gaskets, clean ALL of the old gasket and sealer off the pump and block, and clean the threads on the bolts. Depending on the sealer, you may have to wait a few (or many) hours for it to set up before filling and running the engine. Read the instructions. Put some sealer on the bolt threads and you should be good. This is exactly how I did mine 6 weeks ago. 1990 350 TBI engine.

USE THE GENUINE GM PART. I had to. Has not leaked since.

Follow the directions. Use a sticky gasket mounter not a silicone.

When the factory gasket absorbs a little coolant, it will help.

GM does not reuse that casting because it gets "sprung"

They have the pump in stock.

Mine is from 1993. it is a 72 engine. it used to need a pump every few years.

It has been used for delivery driving and that's hard use.

Still had its share of thermostats and some head gaskets, but water pump has been flawless.

Other MFR's ? Where did the casting come from? China??????

We always use Fel-Pro water pump gaskets with a thin coat of *clear RTV sealer on each side of the gasket.

You can, yes. Are you sure it is leaking where it is bolted up? I've seen pumps not have the plate gasket installed on the back of the pump.

seems to me you didnt clean old the old gasket off the engine . take off the pump and make sure its clean then try a new gasket

Sealant on the gaskets?

new gaskets and try it again. use a different sealer this time. after your work allow sealant to dry. this time will increase with colder weather! edelbrock gaskacinch is really good sealer.

did you use new gaskets or reuse the old ones? if you didn't replace gasket too, get new ones.

either you didnt prep your surfaces or you gooped on your sealer

I just attempted to replace the water pump on my SBC 350 engine. I laid sealant on both sides of the gaskets, then torqued the 4 bolts to the block pretty well. After I reconnected the radiator hose, water started dripping from both sides of the pump wheee it meets the block. What did I do wrong? Can I try again with the same brand new pump?
