take of the tire, remove the housing of the brakes, make sure you dont have a stuck piston.
Check the brakes for ridges or slopes, and also the rotors check both sides.
if you can find out if its the front or the rear brakes that are scraping. if it's the rear DRUM brakes then the bearing could be worn completely out and you might need to rebuild them or do a disk brake conversion. if its the front brakes then the pads could be missing one of the rotors partially causing the defect in the rotor to make metal on metal conections
Adjustment or the lack of it, doesn't cause a scraping noise. I would take the mechanic on a test drive and point out the noise so they know what they're looking for. Maybe even a different shop than the first one.
depending on the type and quality of pads some tend to squeel. when i replaced mine on my trailblazer they lightly squeeled for a couple of months during break in and now are just fine.
So my brakes were scraping everytime i would press them and it would start about 5-10min after i started driving. I took it to my mechanic shop and they said the pads are fine (front disc and rear drum) except the rear drum brakes needed an adjustment, so i did that which costed $37. BUt they are still scraping after 5-10min of driving,i went back and they said it was just that the brakes were so out of adjustment that they will scrape for a couple hundred miles until they get back to normal, so im doing just that and dealing with it until then. Im just curious to if this is legit or not, like he said the pads were fine and im sure the rotors are too, wouldnt they tell me if there was something wrong with them so i could pay them to fix it? So does this sound realistic on the brakes or no, because im not too sure. experienced mechanic or knowledge appreciated, thanks.
