It depends on the company. In most cases, khaki pants with a nice dress shirt is the standard.
Tattoos, piercings, and stretched ears are not allowed in most companies.
If you work in construction field or manufacturing, steel toe shoes are typically required and long sleeved clothing is sometimes forbidden depending on the equipment you work around. Some places require hair nets and do not allow makeup. (pharmaceutical or food industries)
You can't say for an entire industry - the company and the boss will have much more influence and you may find that what is suitable for one company will get you a warning about "spiffing up" when you go to meetings with other companies.
And, of course, in biomedical, you have to meet the sanitary standards of working with people who are already sick and injured, some of the time.
If your research is good no one will really care. At the end of the day as long as your presentable i'm sure it will be fine.
