1. The plural of university is universities. Only one can be the best, the others are, relatively, "better" or "worse".
2. Glasgow has a long and fine tradition. Strathclyde is only a few years from having been a so called technical college - a good one at that, one has to concede!
3. If you're significantly concerned about "atmosphere" you won't make it through the course. You have little or no time for that anyway!
4. For a first degree (B.Sc.) it doesn't matter much between all the universities in Scotland (I went to Edinburgh) because the course work is basic knowledge and can be taught by any goon - and you'll get plenty of them at any university.
5. For postgraduate study (should you ever consider that) you might have to choose more carefully where to go - you may need resident reputation and expertise to keep your study subject "on the rails". It's often better for a higher degree, to move somewhere else anyway - slightly different approach - new people - new emphasis - etc,
Edinburgh or Glasgow
As far as the education goes study at university is more about attitude of the student than the location
Edinburgh seems to have a slightly better "name" but it's more expensive for accomodation. It also has a better reputaion for the nightlife which for a serious student shouldn't be a priority but for many it obviously is
If you are a serious student on a lower budget I'd say Glasgow, If the name of the university and nightlife are more important then it has to be Edinburgh
All I know of on your side of the world are ETH, and RWTH Aachen.
Best of luck.

What university's are the best for engineering? I'd quite like to go to Glasgow but Strathclyde seems to have the best reputation for engineering. Also, Strathclyde offers more specific degrees. However I do really like Glasgow's atmosphere if that makes sense? Please help?
