Battery Or Alternator??..helpplz!?

Ok, as a mechanic I'd say ask a friend or family member to swap batteries real quick for a test and test the voltage on the battery with the car engine on. It should be reading about 13-14 volts(DC) if it is under 12 volts(9.8 or 10.6 or 11.8) is not the necessary charge for the vehicle to remain under its own power. If the voltage looks accurate, take it for a test drive to the local auto store and buy yourself a battery and put the old one back in the car it came from.

Car died while driving and wont take a jump easily. ok alternator is bad and not charging battery. that is why it did what it did. The battery is on its way out from sitting so long. You actually need both. Also check the belts and hoses since it was sitting. You don't want to have more trouble latter.

Take the 12 volt battery to any store that sells new ones other than Auto Zone. Ask for a free 15 second battery *load test to see what the reserve amperage capacity is. Battery amperage spins starter motors not battery voltage.

How old is the battery? ....letting them go completely dead can greatly reduce their lifespan. It does sound like a dead battery which can no longer hold a charge but the alt may also be fried from trying to recharge a dead battery and run the vehicle. Best to remove the battery and have a shop or parts store recharge it and load test it to see if it good anymore. Replace it if it's bad and have the charging system tested as well to see if the alt is bad as well....some parts stores can also test them for free or a shop can do it or buy a cheap multimeter/DVOM if you don't have one and test it yourself. Alt's should put out around 13.5 -15.3 volts at idle and fully charged batteries should read around 12.6-12.8 volts with engine off.

Not the battery, batteries are only to start and giving load balance to the cars electrics, but are not necessary for an engine running.

A cars engine runs on its own juice from the alternator.

Most dirt bikes, heck race cars don't have batteries.

Yea it ran a little, cause there was a little juice, died, hook up to jumpers, runs again, disconnect jumpers, dies.......alternator....or alternator wiring.

Now the battery IS probably shot sure, toss a new battery in. Not gonna fix it, might make it home from the auto shop all happy, because you were using the battery, not the alternator.

Keep eyes on the battery gauge, the one that goes 8-16v

See it key off engine off, should be nothing :)

Key on engine off should be 12

Key on engine on should be 14

Because the alternator is making the 14V, dang some people are sure

alright simplify......

start any normal, car, running?

K now disconnect the battery!

OMG it still runs..... MAGIC

Hello

Sounds more like the battery

Andy C

Batteries die if they are not used for some time. New battery needed.

Sounds like a loose vagina to me

I have a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer..

it's been sitting outside for the past like 6 months...it needed a few repairs, and couldn't get around to fixing until a few weeks ago..had the wheel bearings replaced and such..well finally after sitting outside since January 2014, the day before this thanksgiving we finally jumpstart the vehicle and drive it towards home... well we get to this gas station.. and the car battery dies..we end up having to jumpstart it again..drive a little more and then the car is completely dead..we hook the car to jumpercables and try and charge the battery..the cars lights and stuff will come on..but it wont make any sound only if the person jumping the car is revving the engine intensely...could it be the battery is worn out and can no longer hold a charge?.
