The clicking noise you are hearing is usually the clutch pulling in and out, you can see this happening by looking at the A/C pulley that the belt is turning.
This usually means that the system is low of refrigerant. The compressor pulls in attempting to start, when it starts it pulls the pressure down on the suction of the air compressor. The low cuttoff switch cuts the compressor clutch back off. This results in the compressor clutch clicking in and out in an endless cycle.
I would check the pressure on my refrigerant first and make certain the system is adequately charged. I can't imagine how the compressor would be damaged from a fender bender. You would have to go through the radiator and crunch the car almost all the way to the engine block to damage the compressor. You should be able to see visual damage.
Pep boys may be right, but I might get a second opinion.
You can buy a rebuilt compressor from any parts place. You could also get one on E-bay. You can also buy a vacuum pump, which you will need to pull the vacuum on the system before you recharge it.
Sure, buy one used or at a junk yard. As long as it is off a 1999-2003 Protege you are good to go.

I would buy a rebuilt compressor more reliable and have warranty to go with it
I recently bought a 2002 mazda protégé LX and the ac compressor is making clicking noises and not blowing cold enough air on hot days.
Took it to pep boys for a free inspection, and it turns out the compressor is damaged from a recent fender bender before I bought the car.
Some mechanic shops want to charge me around 1100$ to order the part and install it for me.
Id rather order the part and get my friend to install it with me.
Where can I order the compressor and how much is it? When I search for it, the price is around 300$ but I dont know if im looking at the right one for my car.
Please and thank you
