2-Phase Supply to Single Phase Motor?

You should have 240V (1?) across the ends of a single

pole, and 120V (1?)from either end to the center tap.

Pole to pole should be 169V.

Either of the poles is single phase, but don't use both.

Is the motor 120V or 240V single phase? In any event you have to know the voltage input needed for the compressor. If the motor uses 240V then it will take two hot wires (120V a piece, check with voltmeter across one hot and a neutral) and the neutral. Look at the leads going into the compressor motor, is it one black or red or both and a white and a green? If there are two hot wires going into the compressor each of those will take a hot wire from the 2 phase supply.

It is true 2-phase power 4 hots one neutral. There is still a number of buildings here in Philly that have 2 phase. Philadelphia used to be all 2 phase before it became an outdated system when everywhere went to 3 phase.

Did you ever get training in basic electric courses ? There was no TWO PHASE POWER existed in the world. Two Hot lines 240V is still a single phase power. Just hook your single phase compressor Black to Hot line Black and White to Hot line RED shall do.

And do not mistaking 3 phase power source as you called " two phase power". Using two hot lines from 3 phase power source to support single phase compressor result damaging to it !

Here is a place that advertises free help over the phone.

I am installing a new compressor for a customer. His shop is 2-phase 5 wire (4 hot 1 neutral) but the new compressor is single phase. I mainly do commercial and light industrial work, but I have never come across 2 phase. Even though I sort of picked up on the basics I'm still unfamiliar with it so hopefully someone can help me out. I need to get the 2 phase supply to the single phase compressor. Can I just use one leg or is there a transformer I need?

Thanks!
