The so called filter is really just a mesh micron screen 1 inch by 1 inch even though the metal housing filter is 5x6 inches. I believe the fluid in the pan is only 2 qts. My screen filter had NO debris in it oddly enough because it had a 100,000 miles on it. Have you changed your timing belt, pully and tensioner yet? Every 60,000 miles per factory. Use a Gates belt only. Amazon has that kit for $120 with water pump included. Buy the $15 water pump wrench too. Any ? Ask.
Edit: you dont change the filter, you clean it. Like I said, its a 1 inch by 1 inch stainless micro screen. Look at the new one at the auto store before you buy it and you will see what I mean and or look at your old one. Its NOT a wear and tear part. Your quality will be in the gasket replacement.
There is usually a filter in the pan, which must be removed.
I measure what I drain out.
Total capacity is 6.2 quarts. Yes, it has a transmission filter that is inside the casing. Know that draining the pan will not remove all the fluid as some it still in the converter. Only add what you drain out if you are not going to pump out the entire system. Use only the correct fluid as recommended in your owners manual which is GM/Toyota T-IV full synthetic. If you do not want to pump the fluid out of the system just drain and refill, drive for about 50 miles, and repeat about 3 times and you will pretty much have clean fluid installed.
The info is in your owners manual ...you can go to Chevrolet.com and download themanual if you need one.
This trans is a lifetime fill except for police/taxi use, towing or extreme desert temp.
I attended general motors training...we were told many transmissions failure could be traced to incompatible fluids used during service...AND he claimed he'd seen none due to lack of service...just lack of fluid.
how many quarts of transmission fluid does it take and is there a transmission filter
