2003 Kia Rio, engine cranks over but will not start?

Timing belt failure is not always a snapped belt and far more commonly due to the teeth shearing off. When that happens the results are the same: the pistons hit the valves and the overhead camshaft usually locks.

You're going to have to pull the head off to determine how much damage has occurred. But for a 2003 model it may well be cheaper and quicker to just buy a complete used engine from a scrapyard, but check that the donor unit turns over and has compression. Personally, I'd still pull the head off to see what's ruined, and if the pistons are damaged that's when I'd definitely buy a complete engine rather than just a complete cylinder head or getting the existing one crack tested and then overhauled.

You cannot see or touch the timing belt without removing its cover. Your timing belt broke if your valve train doesn't move. Sorry, but you need to know the truth. The belt you see that has tension is the accessory belt that runs the alternator an stuff like that.. If the Kia has an interference engine there are damaged valves from you turning the engine over after the cam belt failed. The cylinder head will have to be removed for these valves to get repaired- replaced, there is no straightening them out. Maybe there is a used head with valve in place from the salvage yard to save time repairing your car, but you're better off with the $2000 repair- all new parts and reconditioning the head you have.

No, I'm sorry but you are wrong. I've removed the two accessory belts; A/C-PS & water pump-alt. I've taken off the upper timing belt cover and the valve cover. I've pried on the timing belt with a crowbar; it has tension.

Tomorrow, I was going to remove the head and look at the damage and proceed which ever way it leads me. I found a engine for $200 plus shipping

we either have belt teeth sheared off thus we still have belt tension but no rotation of cam or..drive to cam has sheared allowing cam gear to rotate but not cam.

both are bad news as valve /piston impact occurs and can write off an engine, at very least head off. new gaskets.oil. coolant. valves. possible damage to pistons may need new plus rebore if scored .marked.

if valves have damaged valve seats? etc we may need an exchange cyl head .

gets time consuming and parts expensive.

Even though we don't doubt your skills, we recommend bringing the vehicle to your local Kia dealership service department. One of our qualified mechanics will be happy to look at your vehicle's engine.

Timing belt has tension, but valve train does not move. I can crank engine from crankshaft bolt; feel compression in one cylinder. I understand that other cylinders will have valves open.

Is it possible that timing gear/crankshaft cog bolts could be sheared off?
