1969 Mustang Ticking?

Has to be in drive, then it ticks. sounds like a lifter.

NOT there when rev in park or neutral. HAS to be in drive and then at approx 2000 rpm. (is that right so far?)

VERIFY EXACTLY how you make it act up. In gear?, and accellerate? power/brake? or start driving? without definite, clear definition and isolation, all this info could be a definite maybe.

put it on a lift and search with a stethescope.

a speedo gear, torque convertor, cooler lines, speedo cable issue,

These things are each costly. Lifting it makes a safe way to find it. put a helper in the car to operate the controls, and always stop the wheels before putting it in another gear. Think more.

It is unusual for a ford auto trans behind a straight 6.

Look for unusual circumstances, foreign objects, (evidence of tampering,) and reproduce the concern to isolate it in a safe environment. starter issue?, where does it come when a stethescope is used.? Flex plate bolts loose? The converter flexes when a load is created, it drives the pump via a shaft between them. (when it is shut off), inspect each bolt and the flex plate for cracks. During a convertor check, the engine must be allowed to idle for a time to circulate the ATF after a time of power braking. dont get the fluid too hot.

set the trans fluid level when it is warm, level, idling in park.

The fix has to be where you find it because it is uncommon

and likely to be a surprise to you. be careful of loose parts. wear eye protection. If YOU raise the vehicle, use jack stands or don't get under it.

The age of the parts means it could be anything.

if you have had any trans work in recent time.

ask them to help find it.

A loose fin inside a torque convertor may be something you cant prove and a trans specialist may have to be consulted.

If the driveshaft has to spin, it's a rotating part other than the torque convertor. since it wont do it at any rpm, till you have it in a forward gear. This may indicate speedo gear, speedo gear holder or speedo cable. some are easy to service, some lose fluid during the procedure. Seek professional help, but read and understand this, so you can communicate with them.

HI, It sounds like an exhaust manifold gasket. They well sound like a ticking lifter but well quit as the manifold heats up and expands to seal the leak.. NOW the leak is worse and is not sealing as it heats up.. Take a piece of hose say 3 ft. long put one end to your ear and run the other end around the motors exhaust against the head (under the intake) you should be able to locate the sound.. My bets on exhaust leak.. I own several old cars.

good luck

First let me say, I have a 66 Mustang w/200ci 6cyl and auto. When you say only in drive at approx. 2k rpm I suspect you are hearing something associated with the speedometer or cable. Does the speedo needle pulse with the clicking? Listen and watch. Good luck.

Maybe one of the lifter need adjustment (ie valve lash). If you are lazy and short of money, you can hope it's only a sticky lifter. They sell chemical for it. I have used a pint of diesel motor oil. I may get some thumbs down for it, but it has worked for my situation.

if it is a rocker. its not that hard to adjust. all you need to do is tighten down the rocker arm connecting rod until the rocker doesnt move completely freely, then take it back about an 8th of a turn and the lifter will be slightly hard to turn by hand.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone can shine some light on my problem here. I own a 1969 Mustang with a straight 250ci six automatic transmission. I always heard a ticking noise when I first started my car but the ticking usually went away when the car warmed up a bit. However, the other day I started my car up after work and on my way home I noticed the ticking never stopped and it actually happened when I drove the car. When the car is in park or neutral and I rev the engine there is no ticking only when the car is in drive. I don't have a tachometer in the car but Im guessing the ticking starts around 2000 rpms. I think it could be a bad lifter or something if it is how easy is it to fix and do you recommend doing it yourself or leaving it in the hands of professionals. If you think its something else please share and if there is an easy fix please comment as well. I am only 17 and hopefully this doesn't turn into a big problem. Also how does such problem occur? Low oil? High revs on start up? Cheap oil? Anything helps. Thank you!
